Norfolk's educational landscape is in turmoil as hundreds of dedicated teaching staff from three colleges unite in a three-day strike, advocating for fairer pay and improved working conditions. The heart of the matter lies in the stark contrast between the pay scales of teachers in further education and their counterparts in schools. City College Norwich, along with Paston College in North Walsham and Easton College near the city, is at the epicenter of this dispute. Lecturers at City College Norwich, who are also responsible for running Paston College and Easton College, are set to walk out for a second half-day on Thursday morning, demanding a 10% pay rise. This move comes as a response to the growing crisis in recruitment and retention of staff in further education, as highlighted by University and College Union (UCU) representative David Hunter. Hunter, an inclusive learning lecturer at City College, emphasizes the real-term pay cuts faced by staff, attributing it to the disparity between pay and inflation. He argues that better pay is essential for attracting and retaining quality teachers, ultimately benefiting the students. However, City College Norwich, facing a budget deficit, has offered a 2% pay award, deeming a 10% increase "simply unaffordable". The colleges collectively employ around 500 teaching staff, cater to approximately 6,200 students aged 16-18, serve about 1,100 adult learners, and support 1,000 apprentices. The UCU, representing over 300 members across the three colleges, is not alone in its cause. They are part of a larger movement, with 24 other colleges across England also taking strike action over unresolved pay disputes.
