Cockroaches and Dead Flies Found by Food Hygiene Inspectors: A Business's Urgent Improvement Needed
A WAFFLE business, Mr Waffle, located at 31 Grange Road West in Birkenhead, faced a dire situation after a series of inspections by the Wirral Council in October 2025. The findings were shocking, to say the least, and the business was given the worst possible food hygiene rating of zero. The inspectors discovered a multitude of issues, including cockroaches, both live and dead, rancid eggs, and dirty conditions, which posed a significant risk to food safety and hygiene.
The report, obtained through a Freedom of Information request, revealed a live cockroach infestation throughout the business, presenting a serious risk of food and equipment contamination. The inspectors instructed the business to take immediate action to eradicate the pests and to implement proper cleaning and disinfection procedures. This was necessary due to the presence of dirty conditions, which were deemed a potential health hazard.
A voluntary prohibition notice, dated October 23, highlighted a particularly disturbing finding: a dead cockroach next to food packaging intended for ready-to-eat popcorn. The notice stated that these conditions, along with poor cleaning standards and pest management, posed an imminent risk of injury to health. The food hygiene report emphasized the need for thorough cleaning, especially of the slush machine and its components, due to the presence of dirt, residues, and dead flies.
In addition to the cockroaches and dead flies, officers discovered a container of rancid eggs in the kitchen area, emitting a foul smell. These eggs were promptly disposed of. The business was also advised to remove carpets and ensure proper sealing of the bare wood in the front counter area. Repairs were required in the kitchen area to the back, and boxes and items at the back of the premises needed to be cleared for thorough pest checks.
The inspectors criticized the business for not adhering to its pest control, cleaning, and maintenance procedures. Mr Waffle, operated by Mr Waffle Milkshakes Ltd, faced a challenging situation, with an application to strike the company off the register in December 2025, although this voluntary action was later suspended. The business's reputation and operations were at stake, and the need for urgent improvement was clear. The inspectors' findings served as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining high standards in food hygiene and safety.
