In a dramatic turn of events following a nail-biting rivalry game, Duke's head coach, Jon Scheyer, revealed that some of his staff members sustained physical harm during the chaotic on-court celebration by North Carolina fans. This incident has led to a public apology from UNC's athletic director, Bubba Cunningham.
The highly anticipated matchup saw the 14th-ranked Tar Heels secure a stunning 71-68 victory over the 4th-ranked Blue Devils, thanks to a last-second 3-pointer by Seth Trimble. Initially, the shot appeared to be a buzzer-beater, igniting an immediate rush onto the court by ecstatic fans. However, officials intervened, reviewing the play and determining that a fraction of a second remained on the clock. This necessitated clearing the court for Duke to attempt a final play, after which the court was stormed again once the game officially concluded.
But here's where it gets controversial... Scheyer expressed his deep concern for the safety of his players and staff, stating, "I got staff members that got punched in the face. My family, pushing people away, trying to not get trampled. That’s not what this game is about." He emphasized that while he acknowledged UNC's strong performance in winning the game, the focus of his post-game thoughts was on the well-being of his team.
UNC Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham acknowledged the situation, offering his apologies to Scheyer and the Duke program. He confirmed that several individuals were knocked over during the court rush and the subsequent need to clear the court again. While he didn't have specific details about who was injured or how, he assured that the university would review video footage to understand the events fully and reiterated their commitment to preventing such incidents in the future.
And this is the part most people miss... The safety of athletes and staff during court stormings has been a recurring issue in college sports. This echoes a similar incident approximately two years prior, when Duke player Kyle Filipowski was involved in a collision with a fan during a court storming at Wake Forest, and teammate Jared McCain's path to the tunnel was obstructed by a fan. Following that event, Scheyer had publicly questioned the practice of court-storming.
When asked if he still believes court-storming should be banned, Scheyer clarified his stance. He stated that he has no issue with the act of court-storming itself, but stressed that it should not lead to physical altercations or put players in vulnerable situations. He believes that while celebrating a win is important, the priority should be ensuring the safe exit of players and staff.
