Guenther Steiner's MotoGP debut as team boss didn't go as smoothly as his previous experience might have suggested. In a twist of fate, his new team, Tech3, faced a challenging first race under his leadership, leaving fans and experts alike scratching their heads.
Let's rewind a bit. Last season, when Steiner's plans to take over Tech3 were announced, the weekend ended on a high note with a podium finish for Enea Bastianini. Tech3's founder, Herve Poncharal, couldn't help but joke about Steiner's 'lucky bastard' status. Fast forward to the present, and the team's first MotoGP race of the 'Steiner era' proved to be a tough battle at Buriram.
Maverick Vinales and Enea Bastianini, the team's riders, struggled, qualifying 17th and 20th respectively, and failing to score points in the Sprint race. Bastianini managed a twelfth-place finish in the grand prix, but it wasn't enough to hide the team's disappointment.
"It's a clear letdown," Tech3 team manager Nicolas Goyon told Canal+, as quoted by motorsport.com. "This is Günther Steiner's first weekend with us, and all we could offer was this laborious spectacle."
The results were even more frustrating when compared to the success of the factory KTM team, with rider Pedro Acosta charging to a one-two finish and an early lead in the world championship.
"We're clearly disappointed, especially when we see the factory team's results," Goyon continued. "It's a double blow, no doubt. We had good tests at Sepang, but here, we struggled, just like last year with our riders. Qualifying has been our Achilles' heel once again."
The weekend was a bitter pill to swallow, and the team is under pressure to turn things around quickly. Meanwhile, Acosta's team-mate, Brad Binder, scored points in both races, finishing sixth and seventh, adding to the contrast in fortunes.
So, here's the question: Can Guenther Steiner and Tech3 bounce back and prove their worth in the MotoGP arena? Or will this 'laborious spectacle' become a recurring theme? Let's discuss in the comments and share your thoughts on this intriguing MotoGP story!
