James Van Der Beek's 'Dawson's Creek' Memorabilia Auction for Cancer Fight (2025)

Heartbreak meets Hollywood: James Van Der Beek, the beloved face of Dawson's Creek, is auctioning off cherished memorabilia to help fund his battle against stage 3 colorectal cancer. This isn't just a celebrity selling off old props; it's a poignant story of resilience and a testament to the connection between artists and their fans.

Van Der Beek, now 48, is opening his personal vault of treasures from iconic projects like Dawson's Creek and Varsity Blues. These items, once intimately connected to his career, will be up for grabs at Propstore’s Winter Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction, scheduled for December 5-7. The proceeds from the auction will go directly towards supporting his fight against cancer, a diagnosis he received in the summer of 2023.

Among the most anticipated items is a necklace, famously gifted by his character, Dawson Leery, to Joey Potter (played by Katie Holmes) on Dawson's Creek. The estimated value of this sentimental piece? A staggering $50,000! But here's where it gets controversial: does the high price tag reflect the item's true value, or is it a reflection of the fans' deep emotional connection to the show?

Also up for auction are the white shirt and tan pants Dawson wore in the pilot episode, estimated to fetch around $4,000. The auction offers a unique opportunity for fans to own a piece of television history.

But that's not all! The auction will also feature Dawson's flannel button-down shirts and a collection of props from his bedroom. This includes the Indiana Jones model kit and the E.T. doll, which were prominent in Dawson's room, reflecting his character's love for Steven Spielberg.

And this is the part most people miss: Van Der Beek is also auctioning off items from Varsity Blues, including a pair of cleats and a hat he wore in the 1999 high school football film. This demonstrates the breadth of his career and the lasting impact of his roles.

Van Der Beek expressed his feelings, stating, "I’ve been storing these treasures for years, waiting for the right time to do something with them, and with all of the recent unexpected twists and turns life has presented recently, it’s clear that the time is now.” He added, “While I have some nostalgia tugging at me as I part with these items, it feels good to be able to offer them through Propstore’s auction to share with those who have supported my work over the years.”

This isn't the first time Van Der Beek has been involved in charitable efforts. In September, he had to cancel his planned attendance at a Dawson's Creek event due to his illness. The live reading of the show’s pilot script was organized as a benefit for the nonprofit organization F Cancer.

The Winter Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction, taking place in London, will feature over 1,350 lots. Van Der Beek’s items will be auctioned on December 6. To put things in perspective, The Hollywood Reporter noted that the auction will also feature Boba Fett's blaster from The Empire Strikes Back, with an estimated value of over $1 million.

What do you think about this auction? Is it a touching gesture from a beloved actor, or does it cross a line? Do you think the prices reflect the items' true value, or the fans' emotions? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
