Longer Wait Times at Bedok & Kembangan MRT: What Commuters Need to Know | East-West Line Updates (2026)

A 17-minute wait? That's a long time for commuters! But here's the deal: it's all part of the final phase of an important project to upgrade Singapore's East-West Line. Let's dive in and explore the details.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced that commuters traveling between Kembangan and Bedok stations might face longer wait times, up to 17 minutes during off-peak hours. This is due to the ongoing works to connect the East-West Line to a brand new train depot, the East Coast Integrated Depot.

The project has entered its final phase, with a planned 10-day closure of Simei and Tanah Merah MRT stations, which began on November 29. During this time, trains are not operating between Bedok and Tampines, as well as Tanah Merah and Expo stations. But why the extended delay?

Mr. Chia Choon Poh, the group director of rail (electrical and mechanical) at LTA, explained that the longer wait is necessary for retesting works. One of the platforms at both Bedok and Kembangan stations is being utilized for testing purposes, ensuring the safety and functionality of the new rail system.

The retesting process involves checking the third rail, which provides power to the trains, and ensuring that trackside equipment doesn't cause any obstructions. Trains will also be run at a slower speed to verify the track signaling system.

Over the past six days, an impressive team of 880 LTA, SMRT, and contractor engineers have been working tirelessly, day and night, to remove existing track components and reconnect the new rail and tracks to the depot.

The connection to the new depot is a game-changer. It will provide a home and maintenance facility for trains, easing congestion on the East-West Line. This four-in-one depot will accommodate trains from the East-West Line, Downtown Line, and Thomson East-Coast Line, along with buses at a dedicated bus depot.

While the engineers were busy on the tracks, over 280 staff from LTA, SMRT, and SBS Transit were deployed to assist commuters. Two shuttle bus routes have been operating to maintain connectivity between the affected stations.

Shuttle bus 7 operates between Bedok and Tampines stations, stopping at Tanah Merah and Simei stations, with a frequency of 3 to 5 minutes. Shuttle bus 8 runs between Bedok and Expo stations, stopping at Tanah Merah station, and operates at a 10-minute interval. Commuters pay the same fares for the shuttle buses as they would for train rides.

Despite some heavy rain days, the works are progressing well, and Mr. Chia confirmed that they are on track to resume full service on December 9.

Commuters should also be aware of a new platform opening for eastbound trains heading towards Pasir Ris. This new platform is part of the ongoing works to convert Tanah Merah station into an interchange serving both the East-West Line and the Thomson-East Coast Line.

Once completed, commuters traveling from Expo or Changi Airport and transferring at Tanah Merah towards Pasir Ris or vice versa will need to navigate a slightly different route. They'll go down to the station concourse and then up to the new platform, a change from the previous cross-platform transfer. However, westbound commuters heading towards Tuas Link won't be affected.

So, there you have it! While the wait might be a bit longer, these upgrades are essential for the smooth operation of Singapore's rail network.

What do you think about these infrastructure improvements? Do you think the benefits outweigh the temporary inconveniences? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!
