In a stunning display of skill and resilience, Hideki Matsuyama clinched victory at the Hero World Challenge, defeating Alex Noren in a thrilling playoff. This win wasn't just a triumph; it was a testament to Matsuyama's consistent excellence. Let's dive into the details of this captivating match!
Matsuyama, mirroring his season's start, sealed the deal on Sunday, December 7th, with an impressive 8-under 64. The drama reached its peak when he executed a remarkable 9-iron shot, landing the ball a mere 2 feet from the pin on the first playoff hole, securing his win over Noren.
Remember how Matsuyama began the year? He set a PGA Tour record at Kapalua. During this tournament, he holed out from 116 yards on the 10th fairway for an eagle, allowing him to overtake Sepp Straka and Scottie Scheffler, thus taking control at Albany Golf Club.
Meanwhile, Alex Noren, who faced a delayed start to his season due to a hamstring injury, fought back fiercely. He managed to catch up with Matsuyama with an 18-foot birdie putt on the final hole, scoring a 64 and tying him at 22-under 266, forcing a playoff.
The sudden-death round was short-lived. Matsuyama, known for his unique one-handed follow-through, watched his 9-iron soar towards the flag, landing perfectly. Noren's attempt at a 20-foot birdie, however, veered off course.
"It was a perfect distance for me," Matsuyama remarked. "Early on the second shot (in regulation), I missed a little to the right. I was going right at it and was able to hit a great shot."
This victory marked Matsuyama's second time winning the holiday event hosted by Tiger Woods, having also won in 2016. Straka, who was leading after the third round, finished alone in third place after a birdie on the final hole, scoring a 68. Scottie Scheffler, after a slow start, tied for fourth place with J.J. Spaun, the U.S. Open champion, both scoring a 68 and 65, respectively.
Matsuyama's remarkable performance included an eagle, tying him with Straka. The tournament then took an interesting turn on the par-5 11th hole. Scheffler, trailing by two shots, made a risky decision by hitting a driver off the fairway. This resulted in a series of unfortunate events, including a bogey, putting him further behind.
Scheffler's struggles continued with another bogey on the par-3 12th hole, leaving him five shots behind Matsuyama. The Japanese star then solidified his lead with a 30-foot birdie putt on the 13th hole. Despite these setbacks, Scheffler concluded his season with an impressive record, finishing no worse than a tie for eighth in his last 16 events.
Scheffler expressed satisfaction with his performance, stating, "It's nice to come down here, kind of gauge where I'm at... I definitely felt like some of the stuff I've been working on the last few weeks, I saw some progress here, and the stuff I was focused on in the offseason, I definitely saw some progress here as well. Good place to be."
This win brings Matsuyama's worldwide wins to 21. He wore his signature yellow shirt and, despite not capitalizing on the back nine's par 5s, his bogey-free round and the incredible playoff shot secured his third trophy from Woods. He also won the Genesis Invitational at Riviera in 2024, also hosted by Woods.
"Tiger told me to shoot 10 under today," Matsuyama said. "I didn't shoot 10 under, but I'm very happy to win this week."
