Putin Threatens to Take Donbas by Force | Ukraine War Updates 2024 (2026)

The specter of continued conflict looms large as Vladimir Putin doubles down on his stance regarding Ukraine. Putin's recent statements paint a clear picture: Russia intends to seize the Donbas region by force if Ukrainian troops do not withdraw. This resolute declaration, delivered during his state visit to India, underscores the persistent tension and the lack of a straightforward path to peace. But here's where it gets controversial: Putin's words also cast a shadow over potential peace talks, particularly those involving US envoys.

Putin revealed that discussions with US representatives, building upon previous conversations, including a meeting with Donald Trump in Alaska, included new elements. He emphasized Russia's unwavering commitment to achieving its objectives, specifically the capture of the eastern Donetsk region. Putin's message to India Today was blunt: "Either we take back these territories by force, or eventually Ukrainian troops withdraw."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has consistently rejected any notion of ceding the Donbas, fearing it would only invite further aggression. This is a critical point of contention. Ukraine currently maintains control over certain areas, even as Russia already controls most of the Donbas, which it illegally annexed three years ago.

Putin's remarks followed a series of meetings initiated by US President Donald Trump, marking a significant diplomatic push to end the conflict. However, these efforts have been thwarted by conflicting demands, particularly regarding Ukraine's territorial integrity and future security guarantees.

Adding to the complexity, Putin's uncompromising stance came just before a planned meeting between Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and son-in-law Jared Kushner, and a Ukrainian delegation led by Rustem Umerov. There was no immediate confirmation whether that meeting took place.

Putin described his five-hour talks with Witkoff and Kushner as "necessary" and "useful," but also "difficult work," with some proposals deemed unacceptable. He noted the detailed nature of the discussions, stating, "We had to go through practically every point, which is why it took so much time." Trump, on the other hand, expressed optimism, suggesting Putin was open to a deal.

And this is the part most people miss: Despite these discussions, Putin has shown no willingness to compromise or negotiate, leaving European leaders, who have been largely excluded from the direct US-Russia-Ukraine talks, to question Putin's sincerity. French President Emmanuel Macron attempted to enlist China's support in pressuring Russia towards a ceasefire, but China's response was noncommittal, only stating its support for peace efforts.

Meanwhile, the conflict continues to rage. Russian attacks on civilian areas persist, with a recent missile strike in Kryvyi Rih, President Zelenskyy's hometown, injuring six people, including a 3-year-old girl, and damaging numerous residential buildings.

What do you think? Does Putin's stance make a peaceful resolution impossible? Do you believe the US is approaching the situation correctly? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
