The Red Sox's Power Play: A Controversial Move?
The Boston Red Sox are on the hunt for some extra punch in their lineup, and they've set their sights on a potential power hitter, Eugenio Suárez. But here's where it gets intriguing: the team's interest in Suárez comes after they missed out on the market's top slugger, Kyle Schwarber, who signed a five-year deal with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox have been in talks with Suárez's camp, considering him as a possible fallback option at third base or even as a piece of the first base/designated hitter puzzle. However, Speier hints that Suárez might be a stretch for regular first base duties, despite some teams giving him a brief look there in 2025.
So, why the interest in Suárez? Well, at 34 years old, he ranked fifth in home runs among all big leaguers last season, trailing only the likes of Shohei Ohtani, Schwarber, Cal Raleigh, and Aaron Judge. Suárez's season stats were impressive, with an average exit velocity of 90.2 mph and a hard-hit rate of 47.6%. However, his strikeout rate and on-base percentage (OBP) are cause for concern.
Suárez's swing-and-miss tendencies are well-known, and while his walk rate has historically compensated for this, it dipped to a slightly below-average 7.3% in the 2024-25 season. Additionally, his chase rate off the plate was a career-high 31% last season, which, coupled with a low contact rate, could be a significant issue.
Despite these concerns, Suárez's power is undeniable. And, as he approaches his mid-30s, he's likely looking at a shorter contract, possibly only two years with a premium annual value. Suárez is also highly regarded as a teammate, which could be a factor in the Red Sox's consideration.
While Suárez might not be the Red Sox's top choice, they join the Cubs and the incumbent Mariners as teams intrigued by his power. It's an interesting development, and it will be fascinating to see how this plays out. What do you think? Is Suárez a good fit for the Red Sox, or are there better options out there?
