Get ready for a game-changer! The new Steam Machine by Valve is set to revolutionize the gaming hardware scene, but there's one burning question on everyone's mind: How much will it cost?
Valve has kept us guessing about the price, but they've dropped some intriguing hints. The Steam Machine boasts a mobile Radeon RX 76000-equivalent GPU with a higher TDP, promising impressive performance. When I visited Bellevue to check it out, the team hinted at a price similar to a high-spec gaming PC.
But here's where it gets controversial... Valve's commitment to affordability is evident. Yazan Aldehayyat, their hardware engineer, emphasized their focus on keeping costs down. This aligns with their Steam Deck pricing strategy, which offered the most affordable handheld gaming PC ever.
So, what does this mean for the Steam Machine's price? If it aims to compete with similarly performing gaming PCs, we can expect a competitive price tag. I built an equivalent PC, and the cost came out to around $913. However, the Steam Machine's compact size, akin to a mini gaming PC, might impact its pricing.
The Steam Machine's specs resemble a powerful laptop more than a desktop. For instance, the Radeon RX 7600M, with its 28 CUs and 90W TDP, is a close match. Currently, there aren't many gaming laptops with these specs, but we can look at laptops with a 6-core processor, 16GB RAM, and an RTX 4060. The MSI Thin B13VF fits the bill, priced at around $780.
Realistically, the Steam Machine will likely fall between laptop and desktop pricing, given its unique form factor and power requirements. Mini PCs and NUCs occupy this middle ground, but they come with a hefty price tag. The Asus ROG NUC, for example, starts at a whopping $1,629!
And this is the part most people miss... Valve has a secret weapon: Steam. SteamOS integrates seamlessly with Steam, making it the primary gaming platform for most users. This allows Valve to subsidize hardware costs through software sales, a strategy console makers have used for years.
With the rising threat of Xbox and its PC-like features, Valve needs to keep PC gamers within the Steam ecosystem. The Steam Deck's success, with its $400 price tag, proves that Valve is committed to affordability.
So, how much will the Steam Machine cost? While my initial guess was around $1,000, I believe it will be closer to $700-800. Valve might even surprise us with an aggressive $600 price point.
