The electric vehicle market in China is witnessing a fierce battle for dominance in the three-row SUV segment, and the Tesla Model Y L is emerging as the undisputed champion. In late August, both Tesla’s Model Y L and Nio’s third-generation ES8 hit the Chinese market, quickly selling out their 2025 production allocations. This surge in demand wasn’t unexpected, given China’s growing appetite for family-oriented, six-seat SUVs. Earlier in July, Nio and Li Auto had already unveiled their contenders—the Onvo L90 and Li i8, respectively—aiming to capture a slice of this lucrative market. By September, Nio doubled down with the launch of its premium ES8 SUV, which swiftly became the group’s best-selling model.

But this is the part most people miss: While Tesla’s Model Y L has maintained its momentum, other players like Onvo and Li Auto have faced fluctuating demand. Onvo’s L90, for instance, saw impressive initial sales, delivering 10,575 units in August, 10,997 in September, and 11,722 in October. However, sales plummeted to just 5,970 units in November, while Li Auto’s i8 saw a modest increase to 6,719 units during the same period. What caused this sudden drop for Onvo? And can Li Auto sustain its growth?

One factor complicating the picture is the end of EV subsidies in China, which Nio’s founder and CEO, William Li, admitted would disproportionately impact sub-brands like Onvo. “Our Onvo L60 and L90 are majorly affected by this cancellation as they are in a relatively low price segment and are more sensitive to such changes,” Li explained. This raises a thought-provoking question: Can budget-friendly EV brands survive without government incentives, or will they be overshadowed by established giants like Tesla?

Speaking of Tesla, the Model Y L’s success is nothing short of remarkable. Deliveries began in September, and within 10 days, both September and October allocations were sold out. By November, all variants of the five-seat Model Y had also sold out, with delivery timelines extending into February 2026 for new orders. While the exact number of Model Y L units delivered remains unclear, CPCA data reveals that the three-row variant accounted for nearly a third of the 47,132 Model Ys sold in November—doubling Onvo L90’s sales figures.

Here’s where it gets even more intriguing: Tesla’s pricing strategy positions the Model Y L between the more affordable Onvo L90 (299,800 yuan) and the premium Nio ES8 (starting at 308,800 yuan with BaaS). Yet, the Model Y L offers a superior range of 735 km (CLTC cycle) compared to the L90’s 570 km and the ES8’s 635 km. Is Tesla’s balance of affordability and performance the secret to its dominance, or is there more to the story?

To boost demand, Onvo introduced limited-time promotions, including zero-interest financing, free Navigate on Autopilot, and complimentary battery swapping. Meanwhile, Tesla offers a 5-year interest-free financial plan for Model Y buyers.
