Kyoto's Challe Cafe: A Bold Fusion of Mexican and Japanese Design
A vibrant transformation of a traditional wooden house in Kyoto has captured the attention of design enthusiasts. UNC Studio has reimagined this historic space as Challe Cafe, a fusion of Mexican and Japanese cultures, and it's making waves in the design world. The cafe, shortlisted for the prestigious Dezeen Awards 2025, offers a unique dining experience with specialty coffee, Japanese tacos, and churros. The interior design mirrors this fusion, with a striking all-red color scheme. However, it's not your typical Mexican red.
"We wanted a fusion, not a stereotype." Studio founder Keiji Kadota explains their vision. By retaining the traditional machiya townhouse structure, they've created a space where the past meets the present. The renovation kept the original pillars and beams, adding a void to enhance the sense of space.
And here's where it gets intriguing: the materials have a story. Persimmon tannins and iron rust pigment create the deep red hue, connecting Mexico's vibrant culture with Japan's historical architecture. The tiles, custom-made with a matching red glaze, and the decorative relief on the doors add a touch of elegance.
The lighting fixtures, fixed to the pillars, provide a unique twist, while the leather-wrapped bar counter and table add warmth. The stools, crafted from seared wooden blocks, showcase the traditional yakisugi technique, preserving the wood's beauty.
But the cafe's impact goes beyond design. Kadota believes it offers a solution to Kyoto's tourism-related challenges. By repurposing machiya townhouses, it attracts locals and preserves heritage. This innovative approach has sparked interest, with other modern machiya conversions gaining attention.
