WNBL Crisis: Player Exodus Threatens League's Future - Paul Goriss Sounds the Alarm (2026)

A potential exodus of star players threatens the very existence of the WNBL, according to UC Capitals coach Paul Goriss. This is a critical moment for the league, and the future of women's basketball in Australia hangs in the balance.

The WNBA, the premier women's basketball league in the US, is currently negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) that promises significant pay increases for its players. However, this agreement has cast a shadow over the WNBL, as young Australian players may opt to pursue lucrative overseas opportunities, as suggested by Adelaide Lightning and New York Liberty forward Steph Talbot.

The timing of the WNBA season, ending just days before the Australian pre-season, has also raised concerns about player burnout. This season, around 10 WNBA players competed in the WNBL, including Opal Jade Melbourne, who openly acknowledged the physical toll of playing in both leagues.

"It's a real challenge for the league and basketball in Australia right now," Goriss emphasized. "The league needs to grow, but we must carefully consider the future. Where will we find the quality players to sustain the league?"

Goriss highlighted the expansion of the WNBA, with more teams and longer seasons, as a direct competitor to the WNBL. Other emerging leagues, such as the 3v3 Unrivaled competition, the high-profile Project B, and the growing Chinese domestic league, further complicate the landscape.

The WNBL's general managers are actively discussing these issues, but the ongoing CBA negotiations in the WNBA, which have yet to reach a conclusion, add another layer of uncertainty. The potential delay of the WNBA season due to revenue-sharing disagreements between the league and the players' union only exacerbates the situation.

"We've been discussing the implications of losing players to the WNBA, but with no clear timeline for the CBA arrangement, our hands are somewhat tied," Goriss explained. "For now, we can only explore different scenarios and develop a plan.

Opal Jade Melbourne, who plays for the Washington Mystics in the WNBA, potentially played her last game for Canberra in their recent win against Geelong Venom. She expressed uncertainty about her future in the WNBL, stating, "Only time will tell. If this is my last time in a Caps jersey for a while, I want to express my gratitude to everyone."

The WNBL has been approached for comment on this matter.
